Sony’s PlayStation 5 isn’t coming out until the end of the year, but announcements for PS5 games already coming in hot and heavy. We already know that it will be backwards compatible with most of the 4,000+ game PS4 catalog, which should alleviate some of the launch day troubles that plague most consoles.

PlayStation consoles have always been known for their fantastic lineup of exclusive games, but so far there are only a handful of confirmed exclusives. Here are all of the upcoming PlayStation 5 games announced so far, plus a few more that we expect to hear more about soon.

Confirmed PS5 games

Dying Light 2

The open world survival horror game Dying Light came out more than five years ago, and now a follow up is slated to be one of the first PS5 games. Like many entries on the list, Dying Light 2 will technically be a “cross-generational” title, since it will also be released for the current PS4 and Xbox One consoles.

Still, Dying Light 2’s open world will be a great showcase for the powerful new console’s capabilities. It’s set 15 years after the first game in the series, and features a heavier focus on narrative. Fans will also be happy to learn that Dying Light 2 will also have twice as many parkour moves to help speed your way through the urban apocalypse.

Godfall

Godfall is an upcoming PS5 game developed by Counterplay Games and published by Gearbox, the company behind the popular loot shooter series Borderlands. It was actually the very first game to be confirmed for the new console at the Game Awards 2019.

Like Borderlands or Destiny 2, Godfall will use the tried-and-true loot shooter formula that mixes first-person action with randomized loot. Unlike other games in the genre, it will have melee-focused combat (making it more of a “loot-slasher”) that’s set against a high fantasy background. Expect it to come out later this year on both the PS5 and Windows.

Gods and Monsters

Gods and Monsters was initially scheduled for release in early 2020, but has since been delayed to the next fiscal year. It’s one of three confirmed PS5 games from Ubisoft, although it will come out on current-gen consoles as well. Depending on how long it’s delayed, it may release simultaneously across generations or be staggered by a few months.

Regardless, Gods and Monsters is a kind of artsy, mythological take on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Players can quest and explore in an open-world environment that’s filled with, well, gods and monsters.

Gothic

THQ Nordic’s 2001 action RPG Gothic is a cult classic, even though it never got the international fame and recognition of other Western RPGs like the Elder Scrolls series. Four Gothic games were eventually released, although the last came out nearly a decade ago.

Now, renewed interest (and THQ’s acquisition of Gothic IP) has lead to development of a next-gen remake. THQ Nordic has promised to stay as true to the original as possible, so both returning fans and those new to the series will find something to enjoy. There’s an hour long “playable teaser” available on Steam, so check that out to get a taste of what’s to come.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Andy Serkis truly brought Gollum to life in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but this upcoming PS5 game finally gives him the spotlight. Developer Daedalic Entertainment scored a licensing deal to expand on the Gollum/Smeagol story in a multi-platform game coming out in 2021.

We don’t know much about the game yet, but Daedalic Entertainment has some experience telling complicated narratives, like its 2017 adaptation of Ken Follett’s The Pillars of Earth. We can’t wait to see how they attempt to make the small creature corrupted by the ring into the protagonist of an action adventure series. Plus, the studio is tapped to create several more games using Tolkien’s famed IP.

Outriders

If you’re tired of developers milking the same IP for far longer than they should, Outriders might be right up your alley. Not too much has been released about the upcoming PS5 game, but we know it’s set on a world called Enoch, where mysterious events have given humanity supernatural powers.

Produced by Square Enix and People Can Fly, Outriders is an ambitious co-op shooter set for Holiday 2020 release on both current and next-gen consoles. That release window might mean it’s also a PS5 launch title, although this is yet to be confirmed.

Rainbow Six Quarantine

Rainbow Six Quarantine is yet another confirmed PS5 game from Ubisoft, although it too has been delayed to the 2021 fiscal year. Like previous games in the series, it’s a squad-based shooter that can be played with up to three players at a time. It will share a lot of similarities with Rainbow Six Siege, including both gameplay and a few operators like Vigil and Ela.

In fact, the entire game was inspired by a Rainbow Six Siege limited game mode called Outbreak. Developers have said that you won’t need to have played Siege to get the full experience, but that should give you an idea of what to expect.

Watch Dogs: Legion

Heavily hyped after it was first announced at E3 2019, Ubisoft’s third confirmed PS5 game Watch Dogs: Legion was initially slated for release in March 2020. That date has come and gone, but the delay means that it will likely land on both current-gen and next gen consoles around the same time.

The slick, ray-tracing enabled trailer revealed a unique game that turns every single NPC into a potential playable character. Recruiting more people with different specialties and abilities to your cause is completely new for the series, but don’t get too attached because if any of them dies they’re gone for good.

WRC 9

Nacon and KT Racing’s follow up to the fantastic WRC 8 racing game has been confirmed as the first in the series to launch on next-gen consoles. In fact, they’re already announced that WRC 9, 10, and 11 will all be coming to the PS5, with the first hitting current-gen consoles and PC on September 3.

WRC 9 will build on what made the previous game great, with an enhanced career mode and more ways to upgrade your team. It will also feature more links to real world championship teams, as well as three new events in Japan, New Zealand, and Kenya.

Expected PS5 games

The Last of Us Part 2

While not yet confirmed for a next-gen release, The Last of Us Part 2 is looking more and more likely to be released as a PS5 game in the near future. Originally scheduled for release May 29, 2020, the current Coronavirus pandemic has put it on an indefinite delay.

The longer the delay continues, the more sense it would make to release the game on the PS5 as well as the PS4. The first game in the series was one of the most popular PlayStation exclusives, so a graphically enhanced version could be a major selling point for Sony’s upcoming console.

Horizon Zero Dawn 2

Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the best selling games for the PS4, moving more than 10 million copies since it was released in 2017. The main character Aloy has even become a kind of PlayStation brand ambassador, so it would only be fitting to see a brand new title on the updated hardware.

To be clear, there has been absolutely no official news on a sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn by either Sony or developer Guerilla Games. Still, rumors are swirling, and a slip of the tongue by a voice actor all but confirms that the title is in the works.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

The long awaited FF7 Remake has already hit shelves in certain parts of the world, but we would love to see Cloud and company make the jump to the PlayStation 5.

The first episode of the game only covers part of the story, so it’s virtually guaranteed that the rest of the story (whenever it’s released) will be told on next-gen hardware. Hopefully at the very least progress from episode one will transfer over to future releases.

Battlefield 6

Battlefield 6 is a no brainer for release as a PlayStation 5 game, and indeed EA has already confirmed that it will be released in 2021 or early 2022. Even so, we’re not including it in the confirmed list because the company hasn’t explicitly said it’s coming to the PS5 (but it will, don’t worry).

With the previous two Battlefield games focusing on World Wars, the upcoming title might see a shift back to modern or futuristic combat like Battlefield 4. Either way, expect EA to commit to the same “games as a service” model used in its other popular franchises like FIFA, the Sims, and Apex Legends.

Starfield

The team behind The Elder Scrolls and Fallout take aim at a new horizon with the upcoming single player sci-fi adventure Starfield. First teased way back in 2018, all we know at this point is that it will be released for “next-gen platforms,” but official announcements stop short of naming the PS5 explicitly. That said, Bethesda isn’t known for doing exclusives, so it’s all but guaranteed to hit the PlayStation 5 when released.

Apart from that, we know pretty much nothing about Starfield. We don’t even know if it will have strong RPG elements like previous titles or be something completely different. Still, its developers have been working on it for over a decade and seem pretty excited about it, so we are too.
