The nine kingdoms are the balkanized remains of the Kingdom of Gelgel which used to rule the island until the mid 17th century.
The kingdoms are:
1. Klungkung
2. Buleleng
3. Karangasem
4. Mengwi
5. Badung
6. Tabanan
7. Gianyar
8. Bangli
9. Jembrana
The monarch of Klungkung is recognized by the 8 other kingdoms as the legitimate successor of Gelgel (as the first among equals). However, Klungkung doesn’t really hold much influence over the other kingdoms
