This is 100% inspired by Jo Nakashima’s “Origami Magic Ball”, the first complicated origami thing I learned. It took me many months to learn to do, and when I finally learned how to do it became one of my favorite things to make. I spent multiple years perfecting my skill at it, to the point where I can make one almost perfectly. I decided to make a more robust one with 3D printing so other people can do it without all of the annoying, and very very precise pre-folding.
