[Project Advice] Ocean water on a 3D Printed Map – October 23, 2022 at 05:45PM

Hey everyone

I’m completely alien to resin, and I’ve never used it in my life so forgive me for asking your community this maybe stupid question. My use case is specific .

I have been working on a project that is a 3D printed topological map. I’m hoping to frame this.

You can take a look at the latest piece here. It’s 25 individual pieces that I’ll be trying to pull together. I’m going to use some glue on the board, and maybe fill in the gaps between the pieces with silicone to hide the seams.

I’ve been printing in warm white eSun PLA+, but there’s not a whole lot of contrast. I was thinking of maybe adding in a blue hued resin into the “water” bay areas of the map to give a little more contrast.

I wanted to know:

1. Is this safe to do with a flat PLA piece? It has borders which come up a few millimeters, so my plan was to just carefully pipette the solution until it fills the barriers, hoping it doesn’t leak through.

2. Will the heat from the curing rise to a point where it will deform the model?

3. What are the best colors and resins to use here? I was thinking a blue hued resin would do best, but I’m open to suggestions.
