Useful Project Idea – Exhalation Delivery for Cheap

Exhalation delivery is a concept with tribal origins – the Kuripe is the earliest example known. The idea is to use exhaled breath to deliver substance deep into the sinuses. This gained attention in the medical community in the late 90s, and has culminated in the creation and successful testing of a device by Optinose. This device and the promise of similar in other areas has made the company worth over $100 million. Delivering the standard nasal corticosteroid fluticasone through it makes for a treatment so superior to what a regular nasal spray delivers they are able to charge $600 a device.

The device, the Xhance, is rather simple and I imagine a device with similar efficacy can be designed and 3D printed.

A DIY device would consist of a nasal spray bottle off Amazon (I’m eyeing the Snoot!, it looks to be quality), an enclosure, some plastic tubing, a mouthpiece, and an o-ring.

The enclosure would surround and stabilize the nasal spray bottle, also forming a seal with it with the help of an o-ring towards the top. It would also have a nozzle of shape similar to the Xhance’s. The tubing would attach to the enclosure and and a 3D printed mouthpiece.
