Utensil Holder with Phone Charging Stand

Project Statement:

The purpose of my 3D Designed Desk Organizer is to help students with virtual learning efficiently by organizing many of the utensils they may need to use during their online learning. The features of my Desk Organizer include 3 floors for:

  • A calculator holder and a large storage compartment for long utensils like rulers.
  • 4 identical and seperated holders to organize utensils into seperate groups such as for pencils, markers, highlights and miscellaneous items.
  • Over 500 cubic centimers of storage for small items that are lying around like erasers, sharperners, paperclips, and 4 USB ports to store USB’s that may be needed for online school.

On the left of the 3 floors of storage compartments is a phone stand for both landscape and portrait mode so that it can be used as a potential second screen for online school, as well as built-in wire organization so that the phone can be charged while being kept on its stand and the wire can stay mainly hidden.

What issues did you come up against?

While 3D designing, a big issue I came up against was thinking of a unique design that can efficiently help online students with their learning. I realized that a big issue that I have is finding the correct utensils whenever I need it during class and instead having to fish into my pencil case and bucket of utensils inconveniently to find things. as well as balancing my phone in portrait mode while its charging. My second main issue was designing overall because this was my first time using a 3D designer (Tinkercad) and I never had any previous experience.

If you could redesign this again what would you change?

If I could redesign this again, I would try to survey students so I could know what the main problem is for other students instead of just using my own personal opinion as well as trying to make my design more compact and effecient based on its size because it would currently need 2 printing sessions since it is longer than 20 cm.

How would 3D printing help strengthen your design?

3D printing would help strengthen my design because it is more sturdy and it has more features that can be individually printed by a machine than a homemade product made of something like wood. It is also much more reliable because I can see where my flaws were once I print it and then adjust my measurements using a 3D software and reprint so I can produce a better overall end-product.
