BJD Lara v1

My girls have been asking me to make a doll ever since I got a 3D printer. This is my first attempt at designing a doll and I know there is room for improvement.

The girls absconded with the prototype print and put some Disney Princess clothes on it. If I manage to get it back I will take a picture of it.

There are 22 points of articulation and both the elbows and knees are double jointed.

The scaled model stands at 5’4″. As printed it is roughly 6.5″ tall (1/10th scale). If you want to scale it to fit an existing doll clothes inventory (we have Disney Princess and Barbie) I recommend measuring an existing doll, scaling the torso accordingly, printing the torso and checking the fit. I believe their dolls are 1/6th scale so starting with 167% scale (multiply by 10/6) in your slicer of choice is an equivalent starting point. If you have doll clothes that are 1/4 scale, which is roughly 16.5″ tall you can start with 250% (multiply by 10/4). There are two torso bust variations (regular and small) to help with sizing.

When I assembled the prototypes for the girls to play with I used a combination of pipe cleaners and elastic. The pipe cleaners gave the doll some stiffness and the elastic held it all together. Double up on the pipe cleaners if you want a stiffer spine and limbs for better posing.

There are also optional pins in the elbows and knees. I used copper wire and a small drill bit to make sure there was a good fit.

If you intend on actually playing with it I suggest at least printing the hands with something stronger than PLA. For most of the other pieces I have not noticed any breaking or cracking.

If you don’t want to make your own eyes you can try 6mm eyes (for 1/6th scale dolls) or 10mm eyes (for 1/4th scale dolls). Use modelling clay or putty to keep the eyes in place.

Thanks, Enjoy!
