It needs more work, but this is the map for the alt-history sci-fi spy novel I’m working on – April 16, 2023 at 04:43PM

I have the first four chapters published on Vocal, if anyone is interested. It’s called Phantom Shift. And should be linked in my profile.

I was told the original post needed in-world context. So, here’s the briefest context I can give.

In Phantom Shift, Brazil has replaced the US as the dominant Western power, due to a variety of factors.

How plausible is this? Well, at the end of the 19th century/ beginning of the 20th century, Brazil, Argentina, and the US all had roughly comparably economies, and standing on the world stage in our timeline. Thus, changing a few key factors in the history of the world gets this portion of the world map(larger Brazilian Empire not shown, I will work on the rest of the world map when I get a chance).

Key factors in this map:

  1. France, under Napoleon III does actually come to the aid of The Kingdom of Araucanía and Patagonia. Mainly to thwart British efforts in the region. While the reign of de Tounens was short lived, as the Mapuche and other native groups that joined in the fight say him as no longer necessary after securing French, and eventually British support(both wanted a trade port in Buenos Aires), and a long victory over the Argentines and Chileans to secure their sovereignty, The Kingdom of Araucanía and Patagonia was declared fully independent in 1873. But independence is still celebrated from November 17-20.
  2. With the war in the south still raging on Francisco Solano López launches his war against the Brazilians and Urugauyans. Solano López fights the Brazilians to a stand-still, with the two parties agreeing to split Uruguay.
  3. After settling their borders with Brazil, Paraguay recognizes The Kingdom of Araucanía and Patagonia, while settling borders and agreeing to not invade south. Part of this recognition and agreement comes from both countries using native languages as their official languages.
  4. In response, Emperor Dom Pedro II changes royal policy, and and makes his line of succession run through whichever of his children is the oldest, thus making Isabel, Princess Imperial of Brazil, his heir apparent. This secured the line of succession, and helped keep the Empire intact during the Republican Insurrection of 1889.
  5. In 1891, seeing an opportunity to expand trade and resource extraction, Peru and Paraguay aligned to split Bolivia in the Chaco-Pacific War, ultimately dissolving Bolivia.
  6. In response to the growing power of their neighbors, and the occupation and later annexation of Dutch and French Guyana during WWII(under the auspice of the Brazilians fighting the Fascists regimes of both countries), Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador reunited to form the United Bolivarian Republics. Only the Canal Zone remained under foreign occupation by the US.
  7. Seeing how the US and Brazil were vying for control in the region, the countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua reunited forming the Central American Republic.
  8. British Guyana was spared, as the UK was a Brazilian ally, and the U.B.R. does not have the means to fight the UK and Brazil for little territorial gain. Also, it provides a buffer state between the U.B.R. and the Empire of Brazil.
