1918 Irish General Election

Interesting map showing the last general election in Ireland before the creation of the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland.

Note those areas which did not receive what they wanted:

  • (Some of) Dublin voted for Irish unionists, wishing to stay in the UK.
  • The Tyrone area (Dark green in modern day Northern Ireland) which voted for Sinn Fein, wanting to leave.
  • The area to the west of the above, in light green, which voted for home rule, but not independence. Now part of the Republic.
  • Area south of the above, – voted for Irish unionists, wishing to stay in the UK. Now part of the Republic.
  • Waterford, in light green in the South, which voted for home rule, but not independence. Now part of the Republic.

The 1921 Irish elections would yield similar results but used a different not geographical voting system, with:

Southern: 124 Sinn Fein seats and 4 unionist. Northern: 40 Unionist, 6 Sinn Fein, 6 IPP (Home Rule).

I guess it’s important to remember the areas that were put to one side or the other without the people’s wishes.
