With the upcoming release for Diplomacy from Renegade Games, I set about upgrading all aspects of my teaching events. One thing in particular I wanted to do was make a giant walkable Diplomacy map for players. This would be eye-catching at conventions and provide a unique experience for players. So I produced a 12′ (3.6m) x 12′ (3.6m) custom Diplomacy map printed on 18oz vinyl.
Today was the first official game on the map, held at “Beyond the Board” game store in Dublin, Ohio. In additional to the giant map, we had large 3D custom printed pieces, used extendable plotter rods to push the pieces on the map, and had WW1-era officer hats. We had great positive response from both players and onlookers. Should be fun seeing this map in use at Origins Game Fair, the World Boardgaming Championships, and GenCon.
I have two more 140 piece sets in the works for this map: one set is the classic wooden blocks Diplomacy players know & love, and the other set is period specific army figures with battleships. I’ll let the players decide what they want to use.
