Modern cartographic alternative to Voyager pulsar map? – February 8, 2023 at 05:03PM

We later learned that the pulsar maps sent out the Voyager golden record a) had some frequencies a bit off and b) aren’t super useful on astronomical timescales because the referenced stars will shift in both position and orientation.

So is there any modern alternative, a map that can encode our position in a simple image and that works better on larger timescales? This would hinge on there being objects that are relatively consistent on large timescales. Black holes sound good, but probably not to specify a location inside of a galaxy. If something like this doesn’t exist what would your attempt at it look like?
