Hello fellow collapsniks,
Here I’d like to share a small world map that I made, with countries color coded in regard of their collapse status.
That map is for my personal use, I just like to see the global overview of collapse at once. The criteria that I used to determine if a country is collapsed or not are also personal and not meant to be agreed by all of you.
In short:
- Collapsed (black): if the country has collapsed, either politically, economically (Venezuela), societally/structurally (Haiti/Lebanon), if it is in a civil war (South Sudan/Yemen), or in a full open war on its territory (Ukraine). Or all at once (Syria). These are only examples, there are more than that. Afghanistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka…
- Close to collapse, serious structural concerns (red): the country is on the verge to collapse, it would not be surprising to see it collapse entirely under a few months. Includes Myanmar, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Russia, etc
- Noticeable, medium-impact troubles ongoing (yellow): the country is going through a crisis, however not that major that it may trigger a collapse in the short term. Still important to monitor. Includes the US, China, Serbia/Kosovo, Mexico, Brazil, UK, Iran…
- Functioning countries (green): all the rest. It doesn’t say anything about the political sanity of the country (North Korea is the perfect example), but the day to day life for most of the population is stable, with bare minimum needs fulfilled. I’m not stating it’s an acceptable level though. Includes most Western countries, but also India, Algeria, Namibia, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Mongolia, Japan…
Keep in mind that in any collapsed country, you will always find households or even small towns/villages that are doing fine. Even in a full scale global worldwide collapse you’ll have some of those. So stating that “my friend lives in Syria and is doing fine” is not a good argument to declare Syria as un-collapsed.
Also note that a collapsed country could go back to green pretty fast, depending the situation. If the Ukraine war finishes, and Russian troops withdraw, then the reconstruction will begin; it’ll take years, but the country would be pretty fast (weeks) back to a normal functioning status, even with structural weaknesses – electricity, public building to rebuild… So it would be green again.
Please tell me what you think. And especially if you think that “this country should be yellow and not red, or yellow and not green” or anything like that: I don’t promise I will blindly agree with you (most probably the opposite :p) but I’m curious to expand my point of view about those.
Also I may have forgotten some countries in yellow/red/black, please tell me if I did!
Again, this is not made to be “the truth about collapse status worldwide”, it’s just my personal point of view. I found the exercise quite interesting so I’m curious of any feedback 🙂
