The style was not one I had ever attempted before, and I made it clear at the outset that it would not be the same, however I do have a large collection of watercolour brushes from GrutBrushes and I knew this would be a perfect time to put them to use.
The most difficult part of this was probably in the detailing. I wanted to make the buildings recognisable enough (and I had plenty of reference images to refer to) however not make the map too crowded as it had to be printed at 9″ x 6″ (though they did later ask for a larger labeless version twice the size for later personal us). I also wanted to break out a little from my comfort zone and make a fancier border for the special occassion. Overall I’m very happy with how it came out and most importantly, so was the client.
