Why could Vader sense the Force in Luke but not Leia in A New Hope? Ignoring the fact that none of those characters were related during the making of the original Star Wars, and just going on in-universe reasoning, Leia was never trained in the Force. Her adoptive parents wanted to keep her safe, so they never nurtured that side of her. And like Ahsoka said in The Mandalorian, without practice and training, the Force fades away. By that point in her life, Leia had only used the Force instinctively in fight or flight, life or death situations. So Vader didn’t sense it within her. But Luke had at least been taught a little about the Force, and was actively using it when Vader sensed it in him.
