Given up by owners, 170-pound senior dog is fighting for his life –

Gus’ story by his foster:

A Purposeful Rescue rescued SnuffaluffaGus right before Christmas in 2020. He was surrendered to the shelter at about 12 years of age. We know his age because he was adopted from the shelter as a four-to-five-month-old puppy. He was surrendered in horrific condition. He was overweight. He’s a Rottweiler that weighed 170 pounds. His teeth were in horrific, horrific condition. He ended up having emergency dental surgery a couple of weeks after he became our foster dog.

Since he was so overweight and his mouth was infected, his thyroid levels were off which caused him to have to take a thyroid med, a pain med, all sorts of things. Gus is just one of the nicest dogs we’ve ever met. A Purposeful Rescue pulls amazing animals all the time and puts them into foster homes and we were blessed to have our Gus come live with us until he was adopted two weeks ago by a wonderful family.

He is just a joyous, joyous dog. Loves all other dogs, wants to be able to run and play, but he can’t. His weight is just so hard on his joints. He has since lost about 25 pounds. And about six more since going home. He’s rounding out at about 140 pounds right now. Gus was also turned in with a cancerous mass on his shoulder and he will have that removed within the next month or so.

It’s very important to know that fostering a dog is not only saving one dog’s life, but also opening up space for another to go into a shelter. And I’m so proud that A Purposeful Rescue is a part of my life and does the work that they do and rescues dogs like Gus, who are just so deserving of a happy life.
