‘The most obese pig’ learns to walk again –

In August of last year, Annabel was rescued by Kate and Andrew’s Kanda Farm Sanctuary after her owners could

no longer take care of her. Scared and fat blind, Annabel couldn’t walk or stand. Purdue University vets said she was by far the most obese pig they’d ever seen.

Since she couldn’t stand up or get her chin into a bowl to eat or drink, Kate syringe fed her water. She also hand fed Annabel, who was clear about her preferences from early on.

Annabel gradually seemed to feel safe and loved as she started to let Kate belly rub her and there was even a hint of a smile. The sanctuary was determined to help her lead a better life through proper diet, love and care. But they had to be careful about her not losing weight too fast as that could cause complications.

Weeks after her rescue, Kate describes the day she cried the happiest tears. That’s when Annabel incredibly got up and walked to Kate. This was a big achievement considering Annabel had weighed 280 pounds in August, which is 180 pounds over her desired weight.

Today, Annabel’s mobility continues to get better. And for the first time in her life, she’s gotten the chance to make a friend.
