Project Statement:
During COVID-19 schools and universities have transitioned virtual learning. However, this process has been very difficult for both students and teachers. To aid in this process, I created tools that would help students create an optimal learning environment. This pencil cup design would eliminate messy desks and provide optimal storage for school supplies. The precise angle of the cavities allows space to be saved and the hollow compartment in the center for small objects. Additionally, the pencil holder rotates for easy access.
During the MakerBot process, I struggled with creating my CAD design. I needed to recall information from Intro to Engineering (PLTW) in my Freshman year. I remembered most of the tools and functions, but I had problems sketching on a curved surface in order to put in my pencil holes. After problem solving with my teachers, we all became super knowledgeable about planes and successfully sketching on them. If I could design this again, In would add a second part that would allow the pencil holder to turn and add grooves on the side of the cup to make it easier to hold and visually appealing. 3D printing would strengthen my design by physically seeing my design, so that I could make further improvements. With a 3D model I could clearly see the failures and success of my design to make a better, overall product.
