Simple basket and filter I designed in order to extract and filter the fumes from my DIY enclosure when printing styrene containing filament such as ASA or ABS.
This screws directly on top of an 80mm fan which should be blowing air up through the basket (‘palm’ or scoop side of the fan up).
The idea is to trace a circle of paper towel using the filter and cut it out. Place the filter in the bottom of the basket with the paper towel on top, then fill 2/3 with activated carbon granules (I bought mine from a pet store). Avoid the dusty powder as it will clog the filter (you can tap the bag or container to settle the dust to the bottom).
This is open topped so if you are uncomfortable with that, I think it would be easy enough to design a lid 🙂
You may be asking… is it effective?
Anecdotally, I think so. I struggle to detect the odour of styrene fumes when the fan is on, which is certainly not the case when it is off. The flow is pretty restricted by the filter elements but you don’t really want high flow out of your enclosure when trying to print warp sensitive materials. The main goal is to keep the enclosure under negative pressure so it does not vent out of the unfiltered openings.
Support is optional. Pretty much standard settings for your filament should work, 0.2mm layer height or higher would be acceptable.
