OVERVIEW:
Here’s a modular mask for the Makers. I printed several masks available out there and personally was having problems printing many of them without supports. I’m getting advice from medical professionals, but this is in no way a scientifically tested or approved mask. Hopefully this is a last resort.
PROBLEMS / SOLUTIONS
There are a few issues I’m trying to I’m soIve with this setup:
problem (solution)
- filters exposed (created a shield)
- hard to breath (enlarged filter area)
- air leaks around filter (screw setup with rings creates strong seal pressure)
- filter material not sufficient (3 filter setup)
FILTERS
I’m using HEPA and MERV16 filter elements. WARNING! I’ve read that fibers from HEPA specifically can be dangerous. Please read up and learn as much as you can. I’ve added a post filter of dense cloth (Maybe cotton? I’m using a dense bamboo cloth)
The mask should have several filters in a specific order:
- 3D Printed Cap
- Rough dust filter
- 3D Printed Ring Spacer
- Home Filter
- 3D Printed Ring Spacer
- Thick Cloth (to catch any particles from the Home filter)
SEALING AROUND THE MASK:
This is a nice setup for the seal

COMING IMPROVEMENTS
- flexible printed seal
- Better moisture protection for the intake
- desiccant holder in the breath guard
