This mask is based on the excellent design that was recently shared by Copper3D: https://copper3d.com/hackthepandemic/
Our testing showed that once you get a good seal around the mask, it becomes difficult to breathe with the single filter mechanism. So I modeled a new version that has dual filters. See our detailed write-up here: https://3duniverse.org/2020/03/18/3d-printing-to-help-with-the-coronavirus-pandemic/
So far, our testing shows that using this mask design with two filters – one piece of nonwoven polypropylene and one of those circular cotton makeup removal pads, the filtration seems to be pretty good. We used an essential oil diffuser to test, and we weren’t able to taste any of the oil through the mask, which should be a good indicator. Probably not perfect, but certainly better than nothing, which is what many hospitals are going to be facing soon.
We have a nurse who is going to have one of these tested and let us know about the effectiveness of the design and the filters, so stay tuned.
Video coming soon…
