Former Mythbuster Grant Imahara has created an astounding animatronic puppet of the popular Baby Yoda character from The Mandalorian — one that probably didn’t cost the equivalent $5 million that Disney spent on the hero version of The Child used on the show.
Sharing his work on his Instagram account, Imahara recounted his process, noting how the project took him “three months of hard work and countless revisions.” Through mechanical design, programming and 3D printing for the molds, Imahara has designed a version of Baby Yoda that can open its eyes and mouth, as well as lift up its ears. He’s already planning on programming specific moods and reactions that involve sound effects. Imahara also thanked the team that helped him on the project, including @saltiesthime, @misslindsayxoxo and Project 842.

Imahara shared two videos and a picture of the fully animatronic puppet. These uploads showcased his work, which managed to successfully capture the cuteness of the character that helped make him so popular, especially when he offers The Child a cookie to eat. He noted how the entire effort is a not-for-profit project, and that they will be taking The Child on a tour of different children’s hospitals in the future with their first visit taking place in April.
Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog and Nick Nolte. The entire first season is available to stream on Disney+. Season 2 will premiere in October.
