In time, the walls that surround you might be made from a printer.
Using a 3D printer, robotic construction firm Apis Cor has built a two-story office in Dubai, now recognized by the Guinness World Records as the “largest 3D-printed structure” by volume.
The office, created for the Dubai Municipality, stands at 9.5 meters (31.2 feet) with an area of 640 square meters (6,889 square feet).
It was built outdoors with a single 3D printer being transported around by a crane to show that the monument is able to withstand harsh conditions without temperature or humidity controls.
A special gypsum-based material was inserted into the printer, and the building’s columns were fortified with concrete and rebar. The office stands on conventional foundations.
The Dubai Municipality building kicks off Apis Cor’s mission to print more buildings. Come 2020, the company hopes to set up affordable housing in Florida, Louisiana and California using this technique.
