The castle was built on the shore of Lagavulin Bay and dates back to the 12th century. It was once a naval base of the Lord of the Isles, chiefs of Clan Donald. Today all that remains are mainly the ruins of the 16th century castle, although the site includes a thirteenth-century courtyard, and a fifteenth-century keep. It stands opposite the famous Lagavulin Distillery.
