People are encouraged to cough into their elbows, as the novel coronavirus and other germs can be present in their hands, possibly contaminating surfaces like door handles for up to three days.
Belgian 3D-printing company Materialise has a cost-free solution for all: a hands-free door opener. The firm is giving away its files for the attachment to anyone with a 3D-printer.
The design allows you to “do less harm, use your arm” by opening doors without touching the handle with your hand.
The template arrives with two detachable parts. For easy installation, the door opener doesn’t require any drilling or for the handle to be replaced, and can simply be fastened over a door handle with four screws.
However, it works only with handles, and not for door knobs.
The company told Business Insider it took just 24 hours to build the add-on.
While the design is created such that you won’t touch it with your hands, there’s still a risk of contamination, and the firm urges that you disinfect your door handles regularly.
